Within Roche's Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), Neuroscience & Rare
Diseases (NRD) we are committed to realizing our long-term vision of changing lives of patients
with severe brain disorders. Our research and early development activities center around large
and rare indications within four major therapeutic areas: neurodevelopmental disorders,
movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis. With strengths across diverse
disciplines, Roche is uniquely positioned to lead in transforming science to medicines for
patients with disorders of the nervous system.

To achieve our goals, NRD at Roche pRED is in the midst of leading a major and exciting
recruitment effort for a large number of new positions including Therapeutic Area Leaders,
Medical Director positions, Clinical Scientist positions, Section Heads, Laboratory Heads,
Scientist positions and Laboratory Associates. All positions are based in Basel, Switzerland.


The Role

Roche is seeking four Therapeutic Area Leaders to lead respectively the four major therapeutic
areas of neurodevelopmental disorders, movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis.
Reporting to the Global Head of NRD at Roche pRED, the Therapeutic Area Leaders will work
closely and seamlessly with all departments within NRD including Research, Early
Development, Biomarkers and Translational Technologies, Operations, and Portfolio
Development as well as with other organizations across pRED and Roche including among
others Therapeutic Modalities, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Late Stage, and Partnering.
Therapeutic Area Leaders will provide strategic and functional leadership of cross-departmental
dynamic networks of NRD members and partners. The major responsibilities and
accountabilities of the Therapeutic Area Leader include establishing an intellectual home for the
network focused on the respective major disease area of NRD, fostering interdepartmental
collaborative efforts on the portfolio, assessment and selection of external Partnering
opportunities, critical advisory role for portfolio project teams, and coordination of initiatives and
efforts in the therapeutic area across Roche. The activities of the networks are aimed at
ensuring the successful delivery of the portfolio in each therapeutic area from target assessment
to completion of early clinical development.

Therapeutic Area Leaders will serve as members on the extended NRD Leadership Team
(eNLT) as well as the NRD Board. In addition to providing leadership for the therapeutic area,
the Therapeutic Area Leader will have the versatility to serve in embedded fashion in one of the
NRD departments in a key capacity such as Research Project Leader, Medical Director,
Biomarker Experimental Medicine Leader, or Project Team Leader.


The Candidate Profile

Experience
The candidate's qualifications include a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD with expertise in any area of
biology, neuroscience, or neurology with deep understanding of disorders of the nervous system
and at least 10 years of R&D experience including senior leadership in the biotech or
pharmaceutical industry. A candidate from academia will be a renowned leader in neuroscience
or neurology with a record of accomplishments in basic or clinical neuroscience and at least 10
years of experience as an independent investigator subsequent to postdoctoral training. Ideally,
the candidate will have a track record of successfully translating molecules from discovery into
the clinical setting, as well as an understanding of regulatory, payer, and commercial issues in
the pharmaceutical industry.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated competence in the following areas:
? Scientific accomplishments. A key quality sought in our candidates will be scientific
accomplishments, insights, and acumen. A strong record of success in research and
clinical development efforts will be important as well as evidence of leadership in any
area of biology, neuroscience, or neurology.
? Collaborative leadership. It is essential that the candidate is highly collaborative. The
role requires a leader who inspires diverse individuals to work together, persuades
others to pursue innovative ideas and can work with a large number of partners across
the organization with the aim of improving performance and meeting goals. The
candidate has a track record as a scientific negotiator with the ability to find win-win
scenarios. The candidate will inspire and create a strong sense of team spirit in the
organization.
? Strategic leadership. In partnership with other leaders in NRD, the candidate will
articulate strategic frameworks to inform operational delivery of the portfolio in the
respective therapeutic network. The candidate understands how to focus on the delivery
of goals, and will have the ability to contribute strategic insights to prioritization and
decision-making. In addition, the candidate will articulate long-term opportunities and
threats in the therapeutic area, evaluate options, and take proactive steps to address
them. The candidate will also understand how to align the direction of the therapeutic
area in the context of NRD, pRED, and Roche.

Key Responsibilities
? Articulate and implement the strategy within the therapeutic area
? Establish and continue to build a network to facilitate and coordinate interactions across
NRD departments, as well as other organizations within pRED including Therapeutic
Modalities, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Strategy-Portfolio & Clinical Operations, and
Informatics as well as across Roche including Pharma Development, Global Product
Strategy, and Partnering to facilitate prosecution of the portfolio and respond to the external
environment in the therapeutic area
? Establish an intellectual home for the network focused on the therapeutic area including
through developing a dynamic external speaker program for the therapeutic area
? Anticipate new trends in research, technologies, and programs to help promote rigorous
exploration of new targets and enhance the translatability of molecules from preclinical to
clinical studies, and to enhance our development and understanding of novel and emerging
technologies
? Play a key role in evaluation of the therapeutic area portfolio within NRD on a periodic basis
? Serve a key role in the assessment of external opportunities within the therapeutic area, with
accountability after consultation with relevant department heads for selection of partnering
interactions to maintain and grow the strategic direction of the therapeutic area
? Closely interact with the other Therapeutic Area Leaders, Global Heads of Research, Early
Development, Biomarkers and Translational Technologies, Operations as well as with the
Portfolio Department to provide overall strategic and operational leadership for NRD
? Work with other leaders to remove barriers, provide coaching and mentoring at the program
level and lead advisory boar
ds for individual portfolio projects
? Serve in embedded fashion in one of the NRD departments in a key role such as Research
Project Leader, Medical Director, Biomarker Experimental Leader, or Project Team Leader
? Represent NRD both internally and externally at conferences and international meetings as
well as on joint advisory and governance bodies with external partners
