Software Engineer in Digital Health Technologies for the Development of a User Interface for a Novel Brain Imaging System
The Rehabilitation Engineering Lab (RELab) at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich is an interdisciplinary group with competencies in mechanical and electrical engineering, movement science, neurorehabilitation and neuroscience. The RELab uses robotics, wearable sensor technologies, and non-invasive neuroimaging to explore, assess and restore sensorimotor function in persons with neurological injury, to promote sensorimotor recovery and independence.
In the optohive project, we have developed a novel brain imaging system that is based on the near-infrared imaging (NIRI) technology to support fast and wearable brain recordings. We are searching for a software engineer to support the project advancing the standalone optohive software for medical applications. In particular, an end-to-end solution for clinicians will be developed that can stream data from the optohive hardware to a cloud-based server, further including real-time processing and visualization of the brain recordings. The recorded data will be analyzed with advanced algorithms, based on which biomarkers for the users will be extracted and presented in an understandable way. In this position, you will have a strong translatory focus to make the developed software ready for the market and to continue your work in a startup setting in the future.
Your tasks will include:
- Familiarize with the optohive NIRI system
- Adapt and develop new components of the optohive user interface, considering medical use cases
- Implement a cloud-based software framework and an end-to-end data management plan, considering privacy regulations
- Implementation of data analysis/visualization pipelines for brain biomarkers
- Develop an AI prototype to analyze large datasets
- Support the team with software inquiries, including business plan and best programming practices.
We are looking for a candidate that can start as soon as possible with a workload of 60-80%.
You will have:
- A Master's degree (MSc) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
- Proficiency in Python programming, including front-end (Pyside6), database, real-time and/or machine learning applications.
- Working experience in a clinical environment or a medical company.
- Interest in Neuroscience, brain networks and neurorehabilitation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with the team.
- Proficiency in oral and written English. Advanced German skills are a plus.
- A unique and stimulating work environment within a strong and very motivated team.
- An interdisciplinary team. Collaborations with clinicians, researchers, and industrial partners.
- Engaging in a project with a strong translational focus, with the possibility to continue working for a startup.
- Competitive salary according to ETH standards.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents:
- Cover letter outlining your motivation and experience in the field. Mention your earliest possible starting date
- CV including degree certificates
- Transcript of records
