Postdoc/Junior Epidemiologist/Statistician/Research fellow (80-
100%) in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Bern performs research in a
range of disciplines relevant to public health (www.ispm.unibe.ch). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an
interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioural health,
biostatistics, and international and environmental health.
The Child and Adolescent Health Group ,headed by Prof. Dr. med. Claudia Kuehni ,conducts population-
based and clinical studies in child health.
Would you like to improve knowledge and care in children with asthma? Would you like to implement
evidence-based medical practice? In this position, you will take part in the Swiss Paediatric Airway Cohort
(SPAC) study. This is an ongoing large clinical cohort study of children seen in multiple respiratory outpatient
clinics in Switzerland, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Asthma is the most common chronic
disease in childhood. Yet, diagnosing asthma is challenging because it is a heterogenous disease highly variable
over time without a gold standard diagnostic test. The factors that predict asthma outcomes remain poorly
understood. We aim to improve foundational knowledge about asthma diagnosis and to develop prognostic
models to predict short-term symptom trajectories and long-term disease persistence. We look for an
experienced research fellow, who will co-lead a research group of 4-6 people on childhood asthma.
Main tasks:
? Manage the SPAC study including coordination of tasks, communication with collaborators, and
implementation of standardization of asthma diagnosis in children’s hospitals in Switzerland.
? Analyse data to develop prediction models.
? Write publications in peer-reviewed journals and present results conferences.
? Support PhD students in manuscript preparation and statistical analyses.
Requirements:
? PhD in medicine (preferably paediatrics or paediatric pulmonology), epidemiology, statistics, or similar.
? At least 3 years’ experience in epidemiology in a medical setting, clinical experience is an asset.
? Experienced with project and staff management, leadership skills, capable of providing feedback in a
supervisory capacity.
? Have a strong research track record.
? Statistical programming skills, experience in Stata or R including generalized linear models, multi-level
models and survival analysis.
? Organizational skills and ability to work efficiently in several parallel projects.
? Ability to work independently and interact with interdisciplinary teams.
? Excellent knowledge of German and English.
The position is available immediately, with negotiable date of start and offered for 2 years initially. Salary
depends on qualification and experience.
