Permanent Position 100% Pharma Services, Histotechnologist I - Rolle

The Histotechnologist I works under general supervision precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. This Histotechnologist I will research, troubleshoot, and resolve histology related inquiries and problems within the laboratory. This position requires the production of the highest quality of embedding, microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, and H&E staining, special / IHC staining and equipment maintenance.
This is the entry level in Histotechnologist job category.  Employees in this position perform a full range of technical procedures in the preparation of tissue specimens.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Works closely with Project Managers to quickly address project needs
  • Receives and sorts specimens for testing and ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all samples
  • Processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting and reviews documentation and samples for missing information, including data entry of all pertinent information into  the appropriate LIS, working closely with the cognizant Project Manager to obtain missing information in a timely manner
  • May prepare solutions and reagents for all testing disciplines
  • Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to established SOP's
  • Prepares tissue specimens with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis
  • Embeds processed tissue in paraffin
  • Performs coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated
  • Performs all special stain and IHC procedures according to established SOP's
  • Performs filing of finished blocks and slides
  • Reports problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment, and supplies to the department supervisor or lead technologist to ensure timely resolution
  • Responds promptly to pathologists, technologists, and administrative requests
  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance/calibration/certification/troubleshooting as required. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests
  • Assist in or perform validation through documentation and development of procedural operations for new equipment, test or reagent lots following manufacturer's guidelines or established department SOP's
  • Participates in quality control initiatives. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory institutions
  • Helps maintain and Improve acceptable efficiency, productivity, and TAT and provides consistent feedback
Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):
  • Coordinates trash and biohazard waste pickups and maintains appropriate documentation; files MSDS paperwork
  • Assists management and technical staff with administrative duties as needed
  • Serves as point of contact for the department; coordinates incoming and outgoing courier shipments and department mail; scans invoices to corporate office
  • May be delegated the task of training other staff in proper performance of both routine and complex procedures and/or instruments
  • Provides technical direction to staff members.  May provide feedback to supervisor on individual and/or team learning progress
  • May obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures
  • Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory equipment and supplies
  • May serve as the Safety Officer
  • Perform other duties as assigned by department Supervisor or Lead technologist

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Medical Sciences or equivalent
  • One to three years equivalent experience as a Histotechnician preferred
  • Understanding of laboratory techniques
  • Proficient in written and spoken English. French is an advantage
  • Possesses appropriate computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments
