Whether you are a generalist, researcher or specialist - develop yourself with us
Your tasks

3D-bioprinting enables the fine-tuned spatial coordination of microbes in artificial biofilms to unlock emergent properties relevant for environmental applications, such as pollutant degradation. This way, the combination of species that normally do not coexist in natural settings may lead to novel technologies to tackle the problem of environmental pollution. In the frame of the Horizon Europe projects NYMPHE and MAR2PROTECT, we offer a PhD position dedicated to the exploration of microbial interactions and metabolic processes in artificial biofilms for the degradation of environmental pollutants, including the following tasks:

  • 3D bioprinting of bacterial communities
  • determining cellular physiology in 3D bioprinted structures
  • evaluation of metabolic interactions
Your profile

3D-bioprinted artificial biofilms can become a valuable platform to investigate interactions between community members and their habitat under controlled conditions. To help establish this platform, we are looking for someone with a broad scientific and technological interest.

You should have:

  • MSc in microbiology or related fields
  • knowledge of microbial metabolism and chemical analysis
  • interest in interdisciplinary problem solving
  • experience with 3D printing

The position is initially limited to one year and will be prolongated after a committee evaluation.
Your prospects:
The FHNW School of Life Sciences offers state-of-the-art technical, laboratory and office facilities. Contributing to the school's highly motivating working environment - which is second to none - are its collaboration with a large number of companies and institutions in Switzerland and abroad, a widely varied programme of scientific events, and daily contact with young students in research and teaching. The FHNW is also committed to equal opportunities and the compatibility of private and professional life.

Your benefits:

Wide range of university sports

Cultural programme of lectures, concerts, theatre and films

Established implementation of equal pay

Targeted promotion of doctoral projects

Annual working time (42 hours/week) with the option of part-time and teleworking

Mentoring programme for career development

Start Date: immediately.
