Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer
Since the first Apollo Mission on the Moon in 1969 the Space Research and Planetary Sciences Division of the University of Bern is actively participating in space exploration missions to objects in our solar system, such as Moon, Mars, Jupiter and others. For a new mission opportunity within NASAs Artemis Programme, the group has to deliver a novel laser-based mass spectrometric system that shall measure on-site the chemical composition of solids fully autonomously. Current plans foresee to send the first of two units end of 2027, the second is currently planned for 2029. To help meet these challenges, we are now seeking an experienced Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer 80 - 100%.

Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer
This position comprises the following tasks:
* Iterate requirements, hardware specification, and interfaces with the instrument System Engineers
* Perform and document design tradeoffs
* Define development and qualification plan
* Perform the design of prototypes and flight hardware
* Produce assembly and manufacturing drawings
* Contribute to the hardware procurement and integration
* Issue test procedures and test reports
* Perform and/or overview test activities
For this position, a good track record in the development of complex systems is expected. Further, experience and familiarity with space projects and knowledge of the ECSS standards would be an advantage. The responsibility of the position requires flexibility to travel. Good spoken and written knowledge of English is required. German would be an advantage.
The position is available from 1st September 2023 onwards, for an initial period of two years with option of extension up to four years.
