Within Roche's Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), Neuroscience & Rare Diseases represents a major focus area where we are committed to realizing our long-term vision of changing lives of patients with severe brain disorders. Our preclinical research and early clinical development activities center around large and rare indications within the four major pillars of neurodevelopmental disorders, movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis. To achieve our goals, Roche pRED Neuroscience & Rare Diseases is currently undergoing a major and exciting recruitment effort for a large number of new positions including a Senior R&D Operations Leader within the Department of Operations. All positions are based in Basel, Switzerland.

The Position

We are seeking a Senior R&D Operations Leader, reporting to the Global Head of Operations of the NRD DTA. The Senior R&D Operations Leader will interface with all departments within NRD including Research, Early Development, Biomarkers and Translational Technologies, and Portfolio Development as well as with other organizations across pRED and Roche including among others Therapeutic Modalities, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Late Stage, and Partnering. The focus of NRD Operations is to support DTA departments and networks towards the successful delivery of the portfolio from target assessment to completion of early clinical development. You provide an objective perspective on the NRD DTA portfolio to enable quality decision-making, ensure effective resource utilization and improve team performance, processes, and knowledge sharing.

Key responsibilities

R&D Portfolio

  • Define R&D portfolio strategies, operating models, operational plans and processes and their integration into the larger pRED and Roche infrastructure
  • Design and implement tracking systems for R&D portfolio performance and projection activities, as well as for budget and resources with our HR and Finance partners to achieve strategic direction and goals and ensure the improvement of R&D portfolio performance and productivity

Operations

  • Provide R&D portfolio operational leadership aligned with the Global Head of Operations
  • Own the business process for Department and Network leadership team meetings and R&D portfolio review committees. In particular, prepare, organize, manage and facilitate meetings, sprints, think tanks, stand-ups and other agile meeting formats, including agenda setting, outcomes, and action items management
  • Typically acts as primary point-of-contact for all compliance matters

Governance

  • Partner with and advise NRD leadership and governance bodies on R&D portfolio status and direction to ensure transparent and informed decision-making to guide both near and long-term planning

Strategic

  • Support the implementation and delivery of the NRD Network disease area strategies. In particular, provide strategic and project interdependencies context to project squads to help create greater efficiencies

Experience

You have a deep and broad understanding of drug development, a track record of successfully managing large and complex pharmaceutical R&D portfolios, and a strong knowledge of R&D portfolio systems and processes.

  • Operational accomplishments. A key quality sought in our candidates will be significant accomplishments in R&D portfolio operations, insights, processes and tools. A strong record of R&D portfolio operational successes in research or clinical development efforts and evidence of senior responsibilities in the pharmaceutical setting will be important
  • Collaborative acumen. It is essential that the candidate is highly collaborative with the ability to work with peers and a large number of partners across the organization who are not in the line-of-command with the aim of improving the DTA operational performance and meeting our goals. The candidate has a track record of facilitating and encouraging multiple relationships across departments in line with matrix project responsibilities
  • Strategic experience. In partnership with other leaders in the NRD DTA, the candidate will support the implementation of the R&D portfolio strategy for each NRD disease focused area. Hence, the candidate must have a strong strategic experience exploring immediate, mid-term and long-term opportunities and threats in R&D portfolios, evaluating options and risks, and proposing proactive steps to address them
  • Results orientation. The candidate is a thinker and a doer. The candidate will focus on key Network priorities and the delivery of Network R&D portfolio goals. The ideal candidate will support the implementation of R&D portfolio strategic priorities beyond expectations
  • Creativity. The candidate will have successfully engaged in dynamic and thriving teams in an environment that fosters creativity and innovation. The candidate will create a strong sense of team spirit in the organization, lead R&D portfolio operations from the front, build effective matrix teams, and take ownership of NRD colleagues' day-to-day issues

Qualifications

  • You have an advanced degree in science (a PhD in a related scientific discipline is favored), in mathematics/statistics, engineering, or business; ideally with a strong background in the life sciences. An MBA is a preferred
  • You bring significant years of pharmaceutical industry experience in drug development across the value chain with at least 3+ years experience in R&D portfolio management/performance analytics, resource planning, financial analysis/budgeting and process analytics in a high tech environment.
  • Skilled at distilling complex/abstract problems into succinct strategic frameworks as well as execution plans
  • Collaborative individual, able to influence without authority and engage senior leaders and partners actively. Clearly articulate and communicate critical analytical findings to senior leadership and drug development teams. Able to influence using active listening, communication and facilitation skills
  • Proven ability to start and drive initiatives to successful outcomes in a cross-functional environment and influencing stakeholders across the organization. Able to switch between "big picture" and "detail oriented"
  • Strong emotional intelligence, communicating openly and respectfully, remaining resilient through changes, flexible and freely expressing creativity.
