The Company

Deeplight SA is a privately held high-tech spin-off company, founded in 2021 by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland (EPFL) and from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. We specialize in developing frequency-agile laser sources with ultra-low phase noise and chip-scale frequency comb generators based on advanced photonic integrated circuits. Our technology base enables us to cater to scientific, industrial, and consumer markets with significant economic potential. By bridging the gap between scientific-grade laser systems and widely used semiconductor laser diodes, we bring low-noise, highly compact laser systems to various applications, such as autonomous driving, optical communication for space, quantum computing, quantum cryptography, fiber sensing, and more.

Cleanroom Nano-Fabrication Engineer with Simulation and Design Experience
Job description

We are currently seeking a highly skilled engineer with excellent technical skills who wants to be actively involved in a start-up environment and set up production processes for the company’s future line of products.

Practically, you will:

  • Research and develop new production processes for Deeplight’s frequency agile light sources
  • Fabricate Silicon Nitride-based photonic integrated circuits in small wafer batches within the cleanroom of the EPFL Center of MicroNanoTechnology (CMi)
  • Perform quality control of processed wafers
  • Carry out optical and MEMS tests and measurements of released chips
  • Document cleanroom processes
  • Design and simulate photonic integrated circuits using Ansys Lumerical and COMSOL and custom tools
  • Interact with external foundries to establish large-scale production
Your profile

You enjoy an environment where your contributions and tasks are largely self-directed, and continuous on-the-job independent learning will be essential. Working in a team of highly skilled physicists and engineers, your expertise will play a vital role in advancing hybrid laser systems. For this position, candidates should possess the following qualities:

  • MSc or PhD in electrical engineering, physics, photonics, or a similar field
  • Experience in nano-fabrication (lithography, reactive-ion etching and wet etching, thin-film deposition)
  • Experience in characterization (SEM, optical or electrical)
  • Experience with mask coding (GDS)
  • Experience with C++, Python, or Matlab
  • PIC design experience is advantageous, as is experience with Ansys, COMSOL or related simulation software
  • Industrial experience is an advantage
