Full Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
The successful applicant will hold the positions of:
- Head, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Regional Hospital of Lugano
- Medical Director of the future EOC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Full Professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences
of the Università della Svizzera italiana in Switzerland, Institute of Human Medicine,
responsible for organizing the theoretical and clinical teaching of gastroenterology and
hepatology as part of the training programs in human medicine.
Essential criteria
The candidate must have:
- postgraduate qualification in gastroenterology in accordance with Art. 20 and 21 of the
Federal Law on University Medical Professions (LPMed). For foreign qualifications,
Mebeko recognition is required before starting work at the EOC; - established experience in gastroenterology with expertise in diagnostic endoscopy,
acquired at least in a leading role at a university or cantonal hospital or equivalent foreign
institution; - academic qualification to teach gastroenterology at a Swiss or foreign university;
- solid and proven experience in the clinical and managerial running of a hospital service;
- expertise in the clinical management of endoscopy rooms, outpatient clinics and ward
patients; - ability to manage quality and clinical governance programs for the Service's medical staff;
- willingness to collaborate with a proven team of physicians active in the various fields of
gastroenterology and hepatology, both at the Lugano site and at the other EOC sites, in
order to continue its development and maintain its clinical excellence; - willingness to maintain and develop a culture of continuous improvement and
optimization of patient value; - experience and willingness to promote multidisciplinary/interprofessional clinical
collaboration (e.g. tumour boards); - experience in actively promoting, contributing to and supporting the achievement of the
objectives of the hospital as a whole; - willingness to continue and strengthen collaboration with local doctors;
- commitment to develop training and research activities that foster the academic
progression of staff members, ensuring continuity with the activities already developed; - evidence of academic teaching, the development of basic and continuing education in
gastroenterology and hepatology and a keen interest in scientific research;

- solid and proven experience in conducting a research program (clinical, translational
and/or fundamental) and obtaining funds for research projects; - willingness to collaborate with members of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the
Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in the definition and implementation of study paths
and the development of research within the Faculty; - interest and motivation to promote projects and positions related to the concept of equal
opportunities; - adequate knowledge of Italian, English and ideally one other national language.
The successful applicant will be offered
- the opportunity to join a solid and experienced staff;
- the role of head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Regional
Hospital of Lugano, and the future role of director of the EOC Division of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology; - involvement in the board of directors of the EOC Department of Medicine;
- involvement as full professor in a new and dynamic Faculty of Biomedical Sciences;
- active participation in the realization of the Master in Human Medicine of the USI Faculty
of Biomedical Sciences.
The starting date is 1st January 2025, subject to negotiation.
