Rare diseases affect 400 million people worldwide, and about 500,000 in Switzerland. Due to their usually early onset, rare diseases predominantly affect children and young adults. Since individually rare, those diseases are also called "orphan diseases". Our research group works on metabolic liver diseases with a specific focus on defects of ureagenesis. We are using standard methodology (molecular genetics, protein biochemistry) as well as unique in-house developed stable isotope-based flux analyses when working with different test systems including protein, cellular and animal models.
This project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation as a collaboration with university groups in Basel and Lausanne.
- You will work at the interface between the University Children's Hospital Zurich and the partner institutions.
- The main responsibilities will include the familiarization and implementation of required methodologies before project start.
- The goal is to contribute to the development of a novel therapeutic approach designed for treating metabolic liver diseases.
- Specifically, the approach involves utilizing lipid nanoparticles carrying DNA expression plasmids for direct and long-lasting gene addition into hepatocytes.
- Since this is a translational project, the aim is to test this new methodology first in cultured cells, then in an existing mouse model and finally, planned as a continuation project, a transfer into clinical practice.
- You could also have the opportunity to participate in the planning and execution of clinical trials.
- You have already obtained a PhD in Biology or a related field,
- You have experience with cell culture and animal work.
- You have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in English and be enthusiastic about working in a highly interdisciplinary environment of scientists, biologists, and clinicians.
- You have a strong research track record.
- Ideally you have solid experience in molecular genetics and protein biochemistry, prior experience with cellular and animal models.
- You have an interest in rare disease and clinical translation.
- You are driven, goal- and team-oriented.
