Director of Arts - internal position
General Description
The ISZL Director of Arts oversees the operations and development of the whole-school Arts programs, providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction across the spectrum of programs including Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Music, and Instrumental.
ISZL seeks a visionary, inclusive, and innovative leader to build and enhance strategic vision, and to highlight, uplift, and promote the Arts across ISZL. The Director of Arts is a forward-facing role, creating connections between divisions within our school, the local Swiss community, and beyond with international Arts organizations. The Director of Arts shares enthusiasm across the Arts disciplines and is pivotal in cultivating a culture of creativity, self-expression, and innovation.
Reporting to: Deputy Director
Areas of Responsibility:
Teaching
- The expected teaching load is 60%
- 40% release for the Director of Arts role (approximately one day each week spent at the Zug and Riverside campus, schedule dependent)
Leadership of the Arts
- Provide support and supervision for Arts leads in collaboration with the divisional Leadership Team.
- Communicate internally and externally to generate excitement and support for upcoming Arts events.
- Oversee Art Technicians.
- Organize and lead effective regular meetings (minimum of 4 per year) with the Arts faculty across the school, focusing on both operational and strategic aspects.
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Act as a unified voice for the Arts, developing an annual program of events for the entire school, considering event spacing and cross-divisional participation capacity.
- Coordinate facilities for Arts events.
- Enhance connections with and participation in ISTA and AMIS consortia, as well as local opportunities and International School connections.
- Manage the Arts budget with the overall Arts needs of the school.
Strategic Thinking
- To actively contribute to long-term strategies aimed at elevating the standards of Arts across the school, both within the curriculum and performances.
- Identify, promote, and conduct professional learning experiences as they relate to current trends and advancements in the field of Arts Education.
- Continue to raise the profile of our Arts programmes to the wider school and local community, fostering strong external partnerships, and providing a breadth of opportunities for our students.
- Connecting with other schools, widening the scope of connection with the local Swiss community and beyond with international Arts organizations to elevate our Arts profile.
Teaching and Learning
- Champion high-quality teaching and learning by providing regular feedback to teachers and modeling high standards.
- Encourage a culture of collaboration, risk-taking, and support within the team, and promote a shared vision.
- Participate in the interview and onboarding process for new staff, ensuring alignment with the goals and philosophy of the ISZL Arts department.
- Promoting concept-based inquiry into the Arts and taking action through the Arts.
Curricular collaboration
- Liaison with Divisional Leadership Teams and Arts subject coordinators/HoDs to maintain good communication between Arts professionals.
- To oversee the development and implementation of vertically aligned curriculum K-12 across the Arts, in collaboration with Curriculum Coordinators.
- Oversee the continuity and transitions of the Arts programs from PYP, and MYP to DP/HS.
- Work with divisional leadership and Arts Leads, strategizing about how to increase the presence of the Arts in curricular and afterschool programs.
- Support PYP, MYP to DP/HS specific exhibitions, shows, and events.
