For one of our clients in the defense industry, we are looking for a German-speaking strong leader who can manage a varied team of highly skilled engineers. You will be the internal and external ambassador for engineering in the Switzerland region. Do you have a clear vision of what the future of engineering looks like? We are looking for a:

The Department Head of Engineering will provide leadership to the functional, operational, and delivery elements of engineering. They will own the four levers of engineering competitiveness: Craftsmanship, Digital Transformation, Operating Model, and Talents & Culture.

The Head of Engineering sits on the specific management board and represents Switzerland Engineering at the country level. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of leading an engineering team (System Engineering, Software Engineering, and Hardware Engineering) and have a proven track record of putting that knowledge into action. Excellent team-working and team-leading skills are required, as is the ability to work highly effectively across both functional and operational boundaries, influencing peers and senior stakeholders as necessary.

• Provide engineering leadership and act as an ambassador externally and within the company, supporting a culture of continuous improvement in project execution, skill development, capability, and product line engineering
• Elaborate the vision of Engineering for the Domain in line with the BL vision, considering the country axis where appropriate to make it meaningful for all of engineering
• Maintain full accountability for the Engineering Performance Plan of the Domain, ensuring it addresses transversal business challenges and aligns with the priorities set by the BL
• Maintain full accountability for the Domain Strategic Capability Plan, ensuring it addresses needs identified through the Strategic Business Plan process
• Maintain and improve professional standards – in coordination with the domain technical leads, develop the engineering and technical (expert) community – providing real purpose to this community and exploring ways to engage and utilize their expertise more widely across our business
• Deploy practices and tools on bids and projects under relevant process owner coordination and aligned with the BL definition
• Ensure there is a clear mapping and understanding of engineering responsibilities within the domain.
• Deploy BL’s E2 governance within the Domain
• Provide line management, coaching, and support to the engineering leadership team and others as required

• BSc, MSc, or PhD in Engineering
• Ability to demonstrate a vision for the future direction of the business for all of engineering
• Clear and demonstrable technical and managerial leadership within an engineering environment
• Excellent people management skills with the ability to influence and challenge others
• Team player capable of interfacing at all levels within engineering and manufacturing
• Represent the business to outside government and customer organizations
• Ability to operate successfully in a multi-cultural environment
• Good understanding of Engineering Standards and engineering processes
• Ability to quickly assimilate and utilize knowledge of the technical and market environment
• Apply technical knowledge to the commercial requirements of the business
• Ability to work professionally and constructively within a team environment providing advice and consultancy
• Self-starter, capable of working on own initiative with a high level of integrity
• First class communication skills – creates an open environment where information and ideas are shared, stimulating innovative thinking
• Fluent in German and English
