ETH Zürich
Digitalization, Software Development and IT staff member
Digitalization, Software Development and IT staff member

At the ETH Student Project House (SPH) we inspire and empower students to cultivate a maker-innovator mindset. We believe that by exploring their ideas and developing their own projects, students gain valuable hands-on experience and learn important skills for their future. This is why we’ve created an ecosystem where students (Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral) are encouraged to ideate, build prototypes, test and refine them.

Our interdisciplinary team of thirty people supports students with the tools and know-how to explore their passion and create their project. We have a greatly equipped Makerspace that gives students access to the tools and equipment they need to prototype. To take projects to the next level we have a co-working, ideation, and event space and we offer coaching.

In order to empower ETH students with their digital project we are now building a Digital Makerspace. There we want to provide hardware and software tools, digital know-how and create a community of digital innovators. For that we are creating and operating a lot of digital solutions, since a lot of our offerings live in the digital space only. We're now looking for a person for our Digitalization, Software Development and IT group. Read on to see if that might be you!

Project background

You’ll work in one of the most inspiring spaces at ETH Zürich, surrounded by 3D-printers, computers, whiteboards, ideation equipment, self-designed furniture, and plants.

  • We currently have two locations. Our main location is close to ETH main building, the other one is on Hönggerberg.
  • We work in the same open space as our project teams and meet with everyone at eye level. The individuals we work with are from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines, which is why we communicate in English.
  • We believe in open source software and contribute back wherever we can.
Job description

Below is a selection of projects you will be working on:

  • Extend and maintain our digital tools:
    • Design and implement a dashboard to visualize the status of our digital services
    • Optimize the entrance terminal User Experience
    • Setup a system to rent and lend our AR/VR glasses
    • Ensure our digital services are accessible (screen reader support, etc.)
    • Maintain and develop our current website
  • Administering our servers, basic dev-ops and keeping everything up to date
  • Digitalization of our processes within SPH
  • Support building the Digital Makerspace:
    • Participate in the design and delivery of services that empower ETH students with their digital projects
    • Create a hardware (AR/VR glasses, video studio) and software tool portfolio and make it available to students
  • Bring your ambitious ideas to help ETH students with their digital projects
Your profile

We need your digital expertise to support our students and the team:

  • You have a Bachelor or Master degree (any study field is welcome, computer science is not required), or you can demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience.
  • You have and can demonstrate appropriate knowledge in digital tools (e.g. Docker, Networking, Unix, Windows)
  • You are proficient in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Javascript, PHP)
  • You have the ability and motivation to learn new languages and technologies
  • You have experience in realizing your own projects. You’ve failed, learned from it, and tried again
  • You enjoy working with people and you’re passionate about supporting them
  • You are able to react flexibly in urgent situations (e.g. if urgent webpage or server problems occur)

A note: research indicates that women and individuals from marginalized groups tend to apply only when they meet all of the criteria. If you believe you’re qualified, but don’t necessarily check every box, please submit an application.

ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.
