Thank you for your interest in Geneva English School. GES is a thriving, academically successful all through school situated just outside of Geneva. We have two campuses - one in Genthod and one in Versoix and offer wonderful students and a warm and welcoming international community. Our school teaches the British National Curriculum from age 3 through to 18 and all our teaching staff are trained in the UK and have significant experience in their areas of expertise from EYFS through to A levels. To support students in their academic, personal and social development, working alongside teachers to provide the highest quality of learning, achievement and overall educational experience for children at the Geneva English School. This role focuses on developing the ability of our students to improve their English literacy skills and will involve working with students who are dyslexic, struggle with organisation and planning of their writing, SPAG and structuring academic work.

Secondary Learning Assistant - English Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist
RESPONSIBLE TO

Head of Key Stage / Director of Inclusion

TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES

Meetings with class teachers, subject leaders, Heads of Key Stages and the Director of Inclusion

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
  • Liaise closely with class teachers to understand what is required for each lesson and what specific support is needed; identifying specific areas of need and recommending solutions.

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of literacy difficulties, such as Dyslexia, and the challenges it can present as well as teaching strategies to support students to access the taught curriculum.

  • Make sure that all students supported by you can access and engage in learning; encouraging them to build their confidence and focus aiming for autonomy.

  • Deliver tailored teaching activities to students on either a one-to-one basis or in small groups, as well as pre-teaching and revision of some tasks or lessons.

  • Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels, making special accommodations where appropriate.

  • Keep accurate and complete records, contributing to student profiles, learning plans and end of year reports. Assist and participate in documenting student progress and monitoring students with the class teachers.

  • Supervise planned activities, lead certain class activities and possibly supervise classes, under the direction of the teacher.

  • Assist in the supervision of students in class, between classes, during breaks and field trips. Show an active commitment to the wider life of the school, including extra-curricular activities and events.

  • Attend meetings and parent meetings when required.Establish good relationships with parents. Pass on and discuss any relevant communication with or from parents.

  • Take an active role in the pastoral care of all students with whom you come into contact, helping to monitor behaviour, relationships, personal and social development.

  • Attend training in methods and strategies that improve general reading, literacy and dyslexia instruction. Keep up to date with legislation and guidelines from the DfE in the UK as well as internationally recognised organisations regarding SEND teaching.

  • Be enthusiastic and proactive in their attitude to the role.

  • Have a proven track record in similar roles or schools and the right to work in Switzerland.

  • Act in accordance with School policies and, in particular, with the principles laid down in the Staff Handbook, Staff Code of Conduct, ICT Acceptable Use Policy and Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy.

  • Undertake such other tasks as may be reasonably assigned by a Head of Key Stage or the Head Teacher.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Experience
  • Must have experience of being an LA working with children with difficulties with learning.

  • Experience of planning and delivering small groups and one to one interventions for children with evidence of impact.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Knowledge of the UK English curriculum.

Essential Qualifications
  • Recent (past two years) working in a high performing secondary school.

Desirable
  • PGCE or equivalent welcome to apply.

  • Confident in liaising with the wider community, including external professionals and parents.

  • Evidence of successfully managing others or directing other members of a team.

  • Experience supporting students as a scribe or reading in exams.

  • Experience working with students with Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and other similar difficulties.

  • Knowledge of GCSE and A level English curriculum to support preparing students for transitions.
